Dental Visits For Children Before They Reach the Age of One

The journey to good dental health is one that starts early and begins when we’re children. You may not have realised though, that while a healthy standard of teeth in children is vitally important, there are strong indications out there to suggest that this process actually begins before the first teeth have appeared. Consequently, it is advisable for parents to consider taking their children for dental visits before their first birthday.

Failings
Despite the value of addressing the issue of children’s health at a very early age, it has been reported that a large number of children have not made a dental visit before they reach the age of one. To be more specific, research recently conducted by the University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh and Public Health England found that just 3% of children in England had visited the dentist prior to their first birthday. Furthermore, according to these findings, just 12% of children in the UK had made a visit to the dentist by the time they reached the age of two.

Despite this being an indication of the fact that a sizeable proportion of children are not receiving the professional dental attention that they should, it also means that children may be at greater risk of suffering problems related to their teeth later in life.

What Problems Does This Cause for Children?
It is unadvisable for children to not see a dentist before their first birthday and it increases the chance of them being affected by certain dental health problems. For example, the failure of children to be seen by a dentist in the initial few years of their life has been identified as creating a greater likelihood for them to develop tooth decay. According to the University of Birmingham’s research, the lack of dental visits in the early years of a child’s life can lead to a poor standard of all-round oral health. As a result of having poor dental health, there is a heightened risk of developing such problems as infection and pain in the mouth which can go hand-in-hand with poor sleeping, plus problems with eating as well as learning and socialising.

Addressing the Problem
Although it would appear as though there is a lack of awareness amongst parents regarding the need of children to be seeing their dentist at a very early age, and though this would suggest that a large number of children face the potential of suffering poor dental health, there is the possibility of tackling these issues. For example, the Little Trip to the Dentist campaign launched by the NHS in the West Midlands has targeted parents and emphasised the important role that early dental check-ups can play in the lives of children. The increased awareness and the rise in visits to the dentists for young children that may stem from this campaign creates a better chance of improving oral health for children.

A Future of Healthy Teeth with MSC
As mentioned earlier, having a healthy set of teeth is an ongoing journey, and while dental check-ups for young children are crucial, they represent the first steps of a process that needs consistent attention. Quick Solutions to Your Dental Problems by MSC

There are times when we decide we need to improve our teeth, and times when there is simply no avoiding having dental work carried-out. However, the regular schedules and routines at the centre of our lives get in the way. In this blog, we take a look at the kind of treatments are available with MSC that won’t place huge demands on your time.

Six Months Smiles
As the name of this orthodontic treatment would imply, having your teeth corrected through this procedure can leave you with the results you want within half a year. The Six Months Smiles treatment at MSC will take between 4 and 9 months on average. Not only is Six Months Smiles quick and effective, it is great for those that are slightly apprehensive about how braces will make them look. The reason for this is that Six Months Smiles are tooth-coloured, allowing them to blend-in with your other teeth and making them more pleasing to the eye as part of your overall smile.

Invisalign
Invisalign is an impressive form of orthodontic treatment. An advanced form of braces, Invisalign should give you better teeth in a minimum of 6 months. Invisalign is used to address such dental problems as crooked or misaligned teeth and its effectiveness is based on the creation of removable aligners that move your teeth comfortably and gradually into the desired position. What’s more, because these removable aligners are transparent, they will be aesthetically pleasing, hopefully making you feel less conscious wearing them.

Tooth whitening is a great method of improving the appearance of your teeth, giving you a shining white smile. Here at MSC, we can offer you Enlighten Tooth Whitening which will combat the staining and discolouration on your teeth, making your teeth look whiter by up to 16 shades. The success rate with this treatment is very high, and in just two weeks via the use of whitening gel and close-fitting trays made especially for you, you will see the improvement that you want in your smile.
We also provide Pola Whitening. Pola Whitening can alter your teeth’s whiteness for the better in just a day. One of the most popular tooth whitening treatments in the UK, Pola Whitening works simply through the patient applying a whitening gel to their teeth. Once applied, the whitening gel breaks down into oxygen and water ions. The oxygen ions become attached to the enamel and react with the stain molecules, breaking them down and making them colourless, before the saliva in your mouth removes them completely.

Another speedy cosmetic treatment which is sure to heighten the glow of your smile, MSC airflow treatment is similar to a scale and polish yet is much more efficient. MSC airflow treatment revolves around the use of a pressurised blast of water, air and sodium bicarbonate. This blast is directed at the teeth through a nozzle, clearing-away plaque build-up and reducing staining. Not only does this airflow jet improve the appearance of stained teeth, it also gives your teeth a thorough clean: it can reach between your teeth as well as up to 5mm into periodontal pockets.

Crafting Your Smile with Dental Implants

Having a smile you can show off and be proud of is something which we all dream of. Having the smile you’ve always desired however can be difficult due to general wear and tear of the teeth and gums, including missing teeth. Missing teeth are often, however, an easy fix and can give people their smile back. There are a number of different implant options available to you at your local Midlands Smile Centres. Read on to discover more about the dental implant procedure.

What’s On Offer
Dental Implants: These consist of a natural-looking false tooth and a titanium supporting rod. This is inserted into your jawbone, taking the place of the tooth’s root. At Midlands Smile Centres, we utilise X-ray imaging which means that the location of where the implant will go can be pinpointed with complete accuracy. We also employ a no-scalpel technique, and as a result, you can expect a quicker healing time as well as reduced pain, swelling and bleeding. The entire procedure is completed within as little as three months following only two visits.

Denture Implants: This, in comparison, is a more modern solution to the problem of missing teeth. Denture implants come in two forms- fixed or removable dentures. The way in which they function is achieved through the fitting of dental implants into the jawbone of the patient.

Implant Supported Bridges: Implant supported bridges work by using implants for support. This makes them different to traditional dental bridges, as traditional dental bridges make use of a minimum of two healthy teeth for support.

The Impact
Dental implants are a robust and reliable choice for replacing missing teeth, and undergoing this treatment is sure to give your smile that has a more natural look. Furthermore, it is likely that your ability to eat will be improved, helping to avoid lodged food.

A positive aspect of choosing dental implants is that, in comparison to how regular dentures function, denture implants work in a way that is more like your natural teeth. Also, due to the fact that ordinary dentures move which can make eating difficult, dental implants are a less problematic option. In addition, they can help reduce the rate of bone loss of the jawbone, which is something that results from tooth loss.

Implant supported bridges offer various advantages to the patient who receives them. One of these advantages is the fact that they are able to last for a longer amount of time than traditional bridges.

Watch the video below to see the kind of impact that our dental implant procedure had on this happy patient:

Emergency Dental treatment at MSC.

As a culture, we have come a long way in terms of dental health. This is mostly due to cheaper dental care on the NHS, and help resources being more readily available on the internet. However, dental emergencies can still occur, which is why it’s important to know the process to go through if you do ever experience an emergency with your dental health. Knowing how to get started on the road to recovery will save you time, money and quite possible pain.

In this blog, we take a look at Midlands Smile Centres emergency dentistry, how it can help, and what you should do if you find yourself with a dental emergency.

Quick action is the most important factor to increase the chance of successful treatment. Quick treatment helps to reduce the chance of infection. In some cases, patients will find an infection occurs if they have failed to address a dental problem within an appropriate time scale. If you require emergency dental treatment, please contact your local Midlands Smile Centres practice, and our reception team will be able to help you start your recovery.

Every MSC practice offers emergency dentistry. However, for emergency cases outside of normal work hours, please contact our Kings Heath or Selly Oak practices, where they can address your emergency at all times of the day.

What Should be Considered as a Dental Emergency?
We at MSC take various dental emergency cases. This can quite often mean that we come across new or different problems on a weekly basis. Generally, we can categorise a problem under one of the following headings:

Toothache
One of the more common problems we encounter with emergency treatment is toothache. This can be very painful but varies between each case. If you feel continuous pain for 30 minutes after taking pain killers and completing a thorough clean of your teeth, this is a clear sign that there is something wrong and getting to your local dentist as soon as possible is essential.

Broken Tooth or Filling
While this problem most commonly occurs with contact sports, this could happen to anyone. A broken tooth or filling can expose your teeth to further damage and discomfort. Failure to address this issue could ultimately lead to the loss of a tooth.

Lump Near the Tooth Line
Normally quite an uncommon dental emergency, but possibly one of the most uncomfortable of problems to have. The lump is normally caused by an abscess which can be rather painful. Addressing this immediately is paramount. Leaving this alone will, without doubt, cause tooth loss of one or more of the surrounding teeth.

Broken Crowns
Again this is a very common occurrence and one which is often ignored. However, in some cases leaving a broken crown can lead to tooth decay at the root of the tooth, which is irreversible. In more serious cases, this can cause an abscess and eventually loss of the tooth. If you have a broken crown, make sure you talk to your dentists as soon as possible.

Dislodged or Knocked Out Tooth
Like a broken tooth, this is a common occurrence for those playing in contact sports such as rugby. In instances such as this it is important to get to the dentist as soon as possible. The quicker a patient can get to the dentist, the better the chance they have of saving your tooth. Another way to increase the likelihood of your tooth being re-inserted is by placing your tooth in milk. This is a genuine way to help maintain the condition of a knocked-out tooth. If you follow these steps, you’ll give the dentist a greater chance of being able to re-insert the tooth.

Lost Tooth
If you’ve managed to knock out and lose a tooth you should still be getting to your dentist quickly. The loss of a tooth can result in infection of your gums, leading to pain and even the loss of more teeth. Getting to the dentist to have the wound cleaned and to introduce a plan of action should mean you can have your smile back in no time at all.

Preventing the Emergency
While some of these emergencies are almost impossible to foresee, most can be prevented as long as you know how. With that in mind here are some simple ways to avoid these problems:

Pay Attention to What You’re Eating
Hard sweets, ice cubes and even corn on the cob can be hard work for your teeth. Avoid eating these on a regular basis as to not damage crowns or fillings.

Wear Protection
When playing contact sports, wear a gum shield. This great bit of protective gear does a fantastic job of keeping your teeth where they’re meant to be. This will reduce the chance of a tooth being knocked out or broken.

Listen to Your Teeth
Have the same approach to your dentist as you do the doctors. Your teeth can tell you a lot, and you know when something doesn’t feel correct. This is a great way to catch a problem, such as an abscess, before it develops and causes any damage.

Don’t Use Your Teeth as Tools
It’s quite common for somebody to come into the practice and have broken or lost teeth because they tried to open a bottle with them. Your teeth are not tools, and using them for anything other than eating can cause damage.

Good Dental Hygiene
The easiest way to keep your teeth in good condition is to have an effective cleaning regime. Cleaning your teeth twice a day, including flossing and mouthwash, will help to give you a long-lasting smile for as long as possible.

10 Ways MSC Can Help You Achieve a Fantastic Smile

If improving smile or recapturing the smile of your youth has been weighing on your mind. There are a range of treatments which may help you obtain a smile you will be happy to share with everyone. This blog provides an overview of some of some of the simple and and not so simple ways you can reclaim a beautiful youthful smile using cosmetic dental services.

1) Veneers

If you have teeth that are an irregular shape, misaligned, discoloured, or are decayed or damaged in some way, veneers are a fairly straightforward solution to this problem. Veneers are thin layers of material that can be placed over the top of imperfect teeth. They are tooth-coloured and usually made of porcelain, and having them means that large sections of your healthy teeth do not need to be removed.

2) White Fillings

As well as the more conventional grey amalgam fillings, MSC also offer white fillings. Not only are these white fillings capable of making the necessary practical improvement to your teeth, but they are a much more natural looking and aesthetically pleasing option than grey amalgam fillings.

3) Restorative Dentistry

In this category of MSC treatment, bridges, crowns and dentures are all available to help improve your dental health. Bridges are false teeth that are fixed to adjacent natural teeth around areas where teeth have been lost due to various causes, and they are ideal if you don’t like dentures. Crowns, sometimes known as a cap, fit over individual teeth to restore them, imbuing them with stability and providing the shape of a natural tooth. Dentures are made using acrylic (plastic) or a combination of metal and plastic. They replace missing teeth and may be held in place with retaining clips.

4) Airflow

By making use of a jet of water, air and sodium bicarbonate, airflow treatment is an effective way to rid your teeth of stubborn stains caused by smoking and drinking tea, coffee and red wine. Able to help reduce plaque build-up and decrease the sensitivity of teeth, airflow treatment is a more advanced form of a scale and polish. Another positive thing about our airflow treatment is that it doesn’t contain any chemicals, so your teeth will become cleaner and will look better without the risk of burns or irritations.

5) Gold Services

If you’re looking for something a little more glamorous to augment your smile, gold services at MSC may just be the thing for you. Here at MSC you can find gold implants, gold crowns/custom crown design, gold inlays and gold veneers. In addition to the obvious style that our gold services introduce to your smile, they can provide the necessary dental function, too.

6) Dental Implants

It is widely considered that dental implants are the most versatile and all-round superior option for missing teeth, so opting for this treatment is likely to be a sure way to enhance the appearance and all-round health of your teeth. Implants at MSC are available in three forms: dental implants, denture implants and gold implants.

MSC are an ideal dentist for performing this procedure. The reason for this is that MSC’s dentists have over twenty five years’ experience of performing successful implants procedures, and with this type of treatment, it is crucial that patients always choose a provider who has a long history of successful procedures, and not simply go to the cheapest provider. Also, we use a no scalpel technique that incorporates X-ray imaging to place the implant straight into the gum without an incision, thus reducing pain, bleeding, swelling and shortening healing time.

7) Orthodontics

An area of treatment offered by MSC that comes in different forms, orthodontics with Midlands Smile Centres are a sure way to correct your teeth for a more visually pleasing smile. Orthodontics treatment utilises braces, and at MSC, we can offer you traditional braces, Damon braces and Invisalign braces. Invisalign braces are transparent alligners. They are removable and are designed to manoeuver your teeth gradually into the desired position. We also provide Six Months Smiles, which are subtle due to the fact that they are tooth- coloured, and move your teeth slowly over a period of 4-9 months to ensure they are sufficiently straightened.

8) Hygienist Treatment

Hygienist treatment is a great idea for your teeth, as it allows the overall standard of your dental health to be assessed - helping you combat the chances of tooth decay, tooth wear and gum disease- and for your teeth to receive a through clean. It’s also an opportunity for you to receive some important advice on maintaining your dental health.

9) Inlays

If you have a large cavity with a healthy surrounding tooth, we can provide inlays and onlays. Onlays are able to replace the cusp of a tooth which maintains the shape of the tooth, while inlays, which are usually made with tooth-coloured porcelain, are inserted into the hole in the tooth.

10) Teeth Whitening

Designed to give your teeth a real cosmetic lift, special trays for home tooth whitening can be made by our highly experienced dentists. Once your suitability for home whitening kits has been assessed, you can begin the treatment. The trays that are made for you will need to be filled with whitening gel and worn for a few hours every day. And once you are satisfied with the result, just stop the treatment.

If you know one of these treatments is going to be a great investment. Allowing you to to have a summer with some photos you will treasure, get in touch with Midlands Smile Centres today. Some of our practices provide free consultations for implant and orthodontic services.

MSC - The Place in Birmingham to Get Orthodontics

What Midlands Smile Centres Offer

Damon Braces-

These braces have a slightly similar appearance to that of traditional braces, but they are actually a highly modern approach to achieving aesthetically pleasing teeth. One noticeable advantage to having Damon brace as opposed to other forms of orthodontic treatment is that their process is a speedy one; the Damon system necessitates 50% of the amount of appointments as would be expected with traditional braces, and compared to traditional braces, the Damon System is finished 6 months earlier.

Six Months Smiles-

This type of orthodontic treatment is absolutely ideal for patients who are insistent on avoiding forms of braces that are unsightly. This is due to the fact that Six Months Smiles are tooth-coloured and therefore, very inconspicuous. And, as you might have assumed from the name of this type of treatment, the process takes a minimum of 6 months to complete, with the average duration of treatment lasting between 4 and 9 months.

By utilising impressive contemporary technology, Invisalign braces are an effective form of orthodontic treatment available through MSC that feature definite cosmetic merits as well. The cosmetic appeal of Invisalign braces derives from their use of clear aligners, meaning that you can enjoy the benefits that they will bring to your teeth without being concerned about your smile being affected by braces that are unpleasant-looking.

Whilst Lingual Braces could be compared to traditional braces, they actually sit behind instead of in front of the teeth. The fact that they cannot be detected by an outsider’s perspective whilst you wear them has earned them the nickname “hidden braces”. Dependent on how misaligned or crowded the patient’s teeth are, Lingual Braces will require between 18 and 36 months for their treatment.

What’s Involved

Damon Braces-

Whereas traditional braces make use of brackets attached to each tooth and a connecting wire that is “tied” to each bracket, the Damon system utilises high tech brackets that have built-in clamps to hold the wire. As a result of this, the tightening that occurs at each appointment with traditional braces is not necessary with Damon Braces. The brackets are glued to the front of the teeth.

By way of the Damon Braces’ high-tech wire – known as ‘shape memory wire’- which is able to return to a predetermined shape, they will gradually shift your teeth into the intended position with ease.

Due to Damon Braces making use of light pressure, they are more comfortable than traditional braces, and numerous patients have claimed that there is little to no discomfort involved in Damon Braces treatment.

Six Months Smiles-

Six Months Smiles treatment is able to straighten teeth and work by moving the patient’s teeth at a gradual pace. This form of treatment is known for its ability to create excellent results within a relatively short period of time. You will also find with Six Months Smiles that they are comfortable to wear, too.

Invisalign Braces-

To begin with, the treatment process for Invisalign braces starts with moulds of your teeth being taken, in order to ensure that you have the most comfortable fitting. There is also the option to view what the expected result of the treatment will be by making use of ClinCheck® 3D treatment plan. Following this initial stage, clear aligners will be made for you by one of Midlands Smile Centres highly experienced orthodontists. Once on, the Invisalign braces will begin to move your teeth into the required position and will do so at a gradual rate and without discomfort.

Lingual Braces-

With Lingual Braces, one of our dentists must first assess whether this is the correct type of treatment for you, and if it is deemed suitable for you, then the process begins with an impression taken of your teeth. The purpose of this is to produce brackets and wires that are tailor-made for your teeth. These small, personalised brackets are subsequently attached to the back of your teeth. A wire will also be connected to exert the correct amount of pressure. Regular visits to your dentist will be required so that adjustments can be made and to check that the treatment process is unfolding in an expected manner. The Lingual Braces use their light yet constant pressure to move your teeth into the desired position.

Some patients have initially found that their speech has been affected by Lingual Braces, but this is swiftly resolved after they have become accustomed to Lingual Braces. It has also been reported by some patients that their tongue can become irritated or swollen due to Lingual Braces being placed behind teeth instead of in front. To help alleviate this soreness, a small amount of wax can be applied on the inside of the teeth over the braces.

Complete Your Smile With Dental Implants

Your smile is an important part of your appearance, it tells people you feel happy, amused and joyous.  A simple smile can make people feel welcomed, valued and can put them at ease. Your smile should be something you can be proud of, and not something you’re ashamed of showing. However, many people are self-conscious about their smile, and refrain from smiling to avoid showing their teeth.

There are a number of problems that can cause people to be unhappy with their smile, including gaps, discolouration, chips or broken teeth, and missing teeth. For many of these problems, there are easy and simple resolutions that can bring back the joy of smiling. Veneers, orthodontics and tooth whitening are all types of treatment that can help resolve issues with your smile effectively.

For missing teeth, a dental implant can fill the gap and give you a confident, full smile again. Dental implants can help you and your smile in many different ways. Here are just some of the benefits you can expect following dental implant treatment:
  • A more natural looking smile.
  • Increased self-confidence and comfort.
  • Rediscovering the joy of eating again.
  • Having a fully versatile, functional and durable set of teeth.
  • Increased pride in smiling.
  • A great way to replace missing teeth.

Types of Dental Implants Available to You

Dental implants come in many different varieties that can help fix different problems with your smile. Discover the different types of implant available to you below.

As the treatment name suggests, this involves one single implant which replaces a missing tooth. This implant is made up of two parts, a titanium supporting rod which replaces the root of the tooth and is placed in the jawbone.  A natural looking false tooth is placed on top of the titanium supporting rod. The implant dentists at Midlands Smile Centres use x-rays to locate the exact position where the implant will go before placing it in the gum.  This helps to reduce swelling, bleeding, pain, and reduces the recovery time.  Ordinarily, two visits to the clinic is needed to complete this procedure within three months.

This treatment works in a similar way to traditional bridges using false teeth to replace missing teeth. This treatment is a great way to improve your smile and the alignment of your teeth.  The bridge is supported by implants rather than using neighbouring healthy teeth.  This treatment has the added benefit of being more durable than traditional bridges and therefore will last longer with careful maintenance. If you’re missing several teeth in a row, this might be the best option for you.

Gold implants work in the same was as ordinary implants, but they also give your smile a striking visual appearance. A gold implant is made up of a titanium implant being fixed in the jawbone and a gold alloy false tooth which is strong, durable and fully functional.  Gold implants work well for the back molars where food is mostly chewed.

These implants are fixed to the jawbone which makes them more stable than removeable dentures. The benefits of this treatment are their durability, comfort, natural appearance, and the ability to eat comfortably, without worrying about the dentures moving. This procedure involves having x-rays and moulds taken, then having the titanium rods inserted as shown in the x-ray. These rods act as roots for the natural looking teeth to sit on.  Once all the rods are inserted, they are given a period of between two and six months which allows the jawbone to heal.  You will be given a temporary denture to wear.  Extensions are attached to the rods and your new teeth will then fitted on top.

The Procedure

Midlands Smile Centres have highly qualified and experienced staff with over 29 years of experience with dental implants. Your dentist will be able to fully explain the process of having dental implants and answer any questions or concerns you may have about the procedure.  It is natural to have concerns, but a free consultation with one of our experienced dentists can put your mind at ease and help you feel relaxed and comfortable about the procedure.

Directly after the treatment, your gums around the implant will need time to heal and set. It is common to experience some swelling, pain and possibly bruising. However, this is something that can be managed well with painkillers and ice packs placed next to the implant.  Your dentist will be available to assist with any problems you may have after the procedure.  Your dentist will also go through how to properly care for your implant, and how to reduce any discomfort you experience after the treatment.

Cleaning and Maintaining Your Implants

Like your natural teeth, your implant will need regular cleaning. The new implant may feel sensitive in the first couple of days after having the procedure.  Do continue to brush your other teeth and gums but try and avoid brushing the implant.  Once the swelling and pain has significantly reduced, you can start gently cleaning the implant as you would your natural teeth.  It is also recommended to use a mouthwash of warm salty water as this helps to speed up the recovery process, and it also helps you to clean other places in your mouth that are hard to reach. Using a straw to drink fluids is also recommended.  Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, diet and routine is important for keeping your new dental implant in good condition.

Am I Too Old for Braces?

The short answer to the question of, ‘am I too old for braces?’ is simply, no! At MSC, age is never an issue and it’s never too late to get ...
